Quick Hit: Topping Circus (Barcelona)

For any fans of Pat & Sticks, the ultimate in ice cream snacks that, unfortunately, are based out of – and only available in – Australia, there is little in the way of alternatives closer to home. Ben and Jerry’s offer a cookie-based option out of most of the larger supermarket chains, and we always have the ice cream van classic, the slider. But there’s nothing that quite compares to the Aussie champion when it comes to ice cream sandwiches.

Until now.

Enter Topping Circus, a small independent ice cream shoppe located in the winding depths of Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter. This blink-and-you-miss-it, family-owned business is little more than a hole in the wall and looks as though some fella decided to convert his garage and stick a big fridge at the front. But the signage is creative and the ice cream just speaks for itself.

All the usual cones and tubs are on offer, and Topping Circus seem to specialise in creative flavours such as Strawberry Cheesecake, Twix and Kinder Bueno. But it’s their outstanding alternative to the above that caught my eye and had me back no less than three times over the course of two days!

Gone are cookie, biscuit and/or wafer, replaced instead by a sandwich of crumbly, sweet macaron, between which is a good inch-and-a-bit-thick filling of firm and lusciously-flavoured ice cream. All the flavours are available here, and the Strawberry Cheesecake was tart and delightfully sticky, but I couldn’t see past the Salted Caramel. It’s the best I’ve had anywhere and the sandwich was just so good I had to overlook all other flavours on hand (sorry Snickers!) and have another.

Any trip to the Barcelonetta should be followed up with a cheeky walk up the Gothic Quarter and one of these to cool down
