13 Mar On the Horizon: Atomic Blonde (aka. Jane Wick!)
Emerging from its hiding place beneath the radar, the trailer for David Leitch’s directorial follow up to John Wick exploded onto YouTube this week with a back-fist that would make Liam Neeson proud. Charlize Theron stars as undercover MI6 agent, Lorraine Broughton, in Atomic Blonde, Leitch’s sophomore outing, based on the graphic novel of the same name.
Despite being uncredited officially, it is known that Leitch also directed the first Wick actioner. If there was any doubt as to the credibility of that fact, one need look no further than the opening combat scene 37 seconds into the trailer, which sees Theron – in a sequence that evokes both Bourne and Bond – dispatch a pair of would-be assassins in a stairwell. Between the fluid choreography and the kinetic camera tracking, the likeness is uncanny – all that’s missing is a gun and a couple of stabbing double taps.
Visually it looks as though we are in for as much of a treat as the Keanu Reeves modern classic was: noir-esque locales steeped in neon; red mist bursting in glorious slow-mo; James McAvoy channelling Tyler Durden in rainbow print and furs. Set in Cold War-era Berlin, the backdrop also suggests a wealth of attractive fashion and set design to come.
For a 3 minute trailer, this ticks a lot of boxes for me. Here’s hoping Leitch delivers on some stellar photography, an inciting narrative, and a killer supporting cast.
Just off to buy the graphic novel now…
Atomic Blonde is due to hit cinemas 11th August 2017.
